Health Benefits Of A Humidifier

We have already seen some of the benefits that having a travel humidifier can give you when looking at specific humidifiers, but let’s just take a look at exactly what a humidifier can help you with.

One, perhaps surprising benefit is the reduced chance of infection or illness. Viruses can’t travel so well in moist air, so you are going to not only be able to breathe better because of the humidifier, you are going to be less likely to suffer from any respiratory related sickness.

Your skin is also going to love you, because it isn’t going to dry out the way it can when you are constantly in dry air.

As well as improving your general breathing it is going to help with nasal congestion, and you are going to have more comfortable sinuses. Your mouth is also not going to dry out while you are sleeping, so some of that growliness that you have been experiencing, which though reminiscent of Tom Waits, is not necessarily good for you.

It has been found to help foster faster healing times, and it is going to make sleeping easier, which again gives you more time to heal. It also means you are going to get less static electric shocks as well, which can be unpleasant.

How To Use A Crane Mini Travel Humidifier

Crane produces some wonderful travel humidifiers, and a lot of them are designed to work with either a travel base, that will be provided, or you can use a standard sized cup which you should fill to at least the minimum fill point. Your humidifier is going to need at least 1oz of water an hour.

You don’t want to fully immerse the humidifier in the water, and you want to avoid getting the on/off switch wet.

Then you plug it into the USB plug or the AC adapter. Once you turn it on the indicator light will come on and the humidifier will start to produce mist, but be aware this could take as long as several minutes.

It will top producing water when it has run out of water. The other thing to think with, is finding a place where you can put it where it is not likely to get knocked over.

Why Wont My Travel Humidifier Work?

This kind of thing is going to happen occasionally, and knowing how to handle it is vital. If you are using the humidifier every day you are going to put a lot of strain on it, perhaps, but then these devices are designed to be hardy, and though there may be days when you need it less, you want the option of using it all the time.

If it really does stop working frequently and it is giving you a lot of problems, you may actually want to invest in a different humidifier. Before you do anything to the humidifier you also want to check that it isn’t going to void your warranty.

Ignoring that possibility, there are some common issues that may be happening that are easy enough to troubleshoot and handle.

It’s not misting for some reason. So start with that most basic of checks - does it have enough power? If it is plugged in properly and it is not charging then there may be something wrong with the cable, or wrong with the power socket. Try switching sockets. If there is nothing wrong with the socket your humidifier is the problem.

If it was working and it stopped then you may have just reached the automatic cut off point, or it may have run out of water and needs to be refilled. Easy enough to check and fix.

If these two simple issues aren’t the problem then the next thing you should look at is the filter to see if there is a mineral build up, and this means you are going to need to clean your filter, or if it is a warm mist humidifier you should check to see if that build up is on the elements.

How Close Do You Need To Be Travel Humidifier

You may be thinking that because you want the room to be humidified, and because you want to be the one that is benefiting from said humidity that you want to have the humidifier right on top of you, but that is not the case, normally. If you have sinus congestion or a cold do have it right next to the bed as it is going to help you more.

Usually you are going to want to put the personal humidifier several feet away from your bed, and minimally three feet away, and it is going to want to be about two feet off the floor.

If you put it where it is going to be regularly exposed to sunlight the water is going to evaporate sooner, and the humidifier is not going to work as effectively and won’t provide you as much relief.

You also aren’t going to want to put it on any surfaces that may be prone to water damage, or if you do, make sure that there is something waterproof between the humidifier and the surface. If you have pets where you are using it you are also going to want to make sure that it is not easy to knock over.

How To Make A Travel Humidifier

For someone who doesn’t want to invest in a travel humidifier, are there other options?

Of course there are. If someone wants something and they don’t want to pay for it, someone is going to work out how to do it some other way.

A sponge humidifier is going to require you to buy some sponges and a large freezer bag. Then you soak the sponge, wring it out until it is just damp, put it in the bag, and hang it where you want the moisture to be. It will make that room less humid and more comfortable.

Plants are a wonderful thing to have in your home, but they have a bonus factor they add to the room that you may not have been thinking with: moisture. Through a process called transpiration, the water you put on your plants moves through your plant and is released back into the air.

A glass of water near a heater is another low budget option that is going to help keep your room humidified, during winter this will keep the room humid by slowly evaporating, and you can even add essential oils to it as well to make your room smell great.

How To Clean A Travel Humidifier

The first question you may have on this is, how often do I need to clean my portable humidifier? Well, most manufacturers are going to give you a recommendation in the instruction manual that you receive, but a good rule of thumb is once a month, but if you are using it a lot you are going to have to judge how well it is actually working.

The recommendation from the US Consumer Product Safety Commision says that humidifiers that have a capacity of five gallons should be cleaned daily and sanitized once a week. Whereas five gallon capacity humidifiers mean you should follow what you manufacturer says, and should get sanitized every couple of weeks.

If you haven’t used it before it needs to be cleaned. The first thing you need to do is unplug it if you have plugged it in. Then you need to remove the filter and rinse it with water - you shouldn’t be using cleaners on the filter and you are going to want to let it dry naturally.

If it has tank you are going to fill that with distilled white vinegar and then let it sit for 30 minutes, scrub it, drain the tank, and rinse.

It’s recommended that you bleach to disinfect the base by filling it with water and adding a teaspoon of bleach for every gallon. Let it soak for 30 minutes, drain it, and rinse to remove the odor of bleach.

Conclusion

As you can see these great examples of what a travel humidifier can do, and the benefits that it can offer you, really do make it an essential purchase. If you have any kind of problem that is related to dry air, or even any kind of breathing problems the health benefits of having a humidifier are inestimable.

The great thing about these mini travel humidifiers is that they are designed to be durable and they are also portable, so if they have been helping you at home you can take them with your when you travel, and you can use them at work as well.

They are fairly unobtrusive, and they can change the whole space to make it a much more pleasant experience.

It can be surprising just how badly the air inside an office or a hotel room can affect you, in terms of drying out your skin and your nasal passages. It's great that the AC keeps the room chilled, but some people are definitely sensitive to it. If you are traveling the change in the atmosphere can cause you issues, and this helps compensate for that.

You need to go and get yourself a travel humidifier today, and now you know what to look for.
