When you compare 50-pint dehumidifiers, there’s a lot to be aware of.

You don’t want a model that does one thing well, you want the best all-around dehumidifier!

There are a lot of choices out there and it’s not always easy to know what matters when you’re shopping. So, when looking for a dehumidifier, be sure to follow these guidelines:

  • Cost
  • Efficiency
  • Design
  • Durability
  • Easy to Use

Cost

While cost shouldn’t be your only guideline (don’t be cheap), you also want a quality model that fits into your needs for your house and your budget.

Spending more money doesn’t automatically mean you’ll get the best quality. You can find a lot of dehumidifiers that have a lot of great value.

Most importantly, you want them to fit your needs well.

Efficiency

This one is important. If you’re worried about cost, you can’t ignore the efficiency of your new dehumidifier.  These are machines that can run for a long time depending on how you set them up, and to do that, certain models may draw a lot of power.

One easy way to judge efficiency is to check for an Energy Star certification. While that won’t always tell the full story, and you should always do your research, it’s a great place to start.

At the end of the day, you don’t want your energy bill shooting up just because you bought a dehumidifier for a room in your house.

Design

This is another overlooked category. Most people spend a lot of time on the interior design of their homes or apartments and then run out and buy a dehumidifier based on stats alone with no thought to how this model might look or feel with the other items in their house.

Dehumidifiers have come a long way in the past few decades to look better and really fit in, similar to how a computer might, in your home.

Make sure that whatever model you decide on has a nice feel to it and fits with your other items.

Durability

My favorite way to shop for durable items is to compare warranties. The longer the warranty, the more reasonable it is to expect an item to last a long time.

There are always exceptions, things break – that’s a fact of life. However, with a warranty, your purchase is protected.

Easy to Use

A dehumidifier doesn’t do you any good if you can’t figure out how to use it.

Make sure you understand how your model works, and more importantly, what settings will be best for your house or the area you want to use it in.

FAQs

There are a lot of questions about 50-pint dehumidifiers, here are some of them that get asked the most:

What area does a 50-pint dehumidifier cover in square feet?

Obviously, this depends on how damp a room is. 50-pint dehumidifiers can be advertised from anywhere as low as 500 square feet to larger areas like 1000 square feet.

While that seems to be a wide range, it does depend on the individual model and how much humidity is in a space for your exact measurement.

How do I drain my 50-pint dehumidifier?

Generally there are two ways to drain these dehumidifiers – you can manually empty the tank after it fills, or you can hook up a hose for a continuous drain.  Whichever you decide, this is generally not a hard process.

What works better, a 50 pint or 70 pint dehumidifier?

Generally, this is a question of your needs.  However, a 70-pint model is typically used for larger spaces.  While it could work in smaller ones, you may be spending more on a model that you don’t need.

How many watts does a 50-pint dehumidifier use?

Generally a 50-pint dehumidifier will draw around 400-500 watts of power. That can be a factor when deciding on which humidifier to go with.

Frigidaire 50-Pint Dehumidifier with Effortless Humidity Control

This offering from Frigidaire is an excellent choice overall.

The dehumidifier runs at a very quiet level so as to not disrupt you in the comfort of your home. It’s easy to set up as you essentially just need to “plug and play” with a standard outlet hook-up.

As easy as this dehumidifier is to set up, it’s just as easy to keep using it in your home. This Frigidaire model comes with electronic controls, and uses a clear easy-to-read digital display to let you know the status of everything.

The tank lets you know when it’s just about full so that you change out the water the model is holding. At the same time, you also have an option to drain the dehumidifier all the time if you want.

The Frigidaire model can work at temperatures all the way down into the 40’s – really nice for those who live in colder climates.

You also have the options to use timers that can last all day, and locks to prevent any unwanted changes from happening.  All of those factors make this a nice and easy to use dehumidifier.

This is an Energy Star certified model, which is great for those conscious about their use in that department.

With your purchase, you also receive a full 12-month warranty so you know that Frigidaire believes in the product they are selling you.

PROS

  • Runs quiet
  • Low temperature friendly
  • Awesome design
  • Energy Star certified

CONS

  • Could run a bit hot
  • May not be long-lasting
hOmeLabs 2500 Sq Ft Dehumidifier 50 Pint Energy Star Safe Mid Size Portable Dehumidifiers for Basements & Large Rooms

hOmeLabs has come up with a really interesting offer here and it’s easy to see why so many love it. You may see this advertised as a “6 gallon” model, that is the equivalent to 50 pints.

To start with, the design of this dehumidifier is excellent. I would say it looks more like a computer than a dehumidifier so you’re going to have no problem finding some place natural to put this in your home or apartment.

As far as the design goes, hOmeLabs is willing to stand beside their product – maybe more than anyone else out there. They’ve got a multi-year warranty that can be extended if you sign up through the company’s website to link up the product to their website.  That’s a long time for this level of purchase and should leave you feeling confident.

You have two modes of use, both of which are fairly easy to figure out. You can run it on a day-long basis until the tank is full, or you can choose to run it non-stop and use a (non-included) hose that can drain the system as it goes.

It does manufacture some level of heat, however if the area you’re worried about is an appropriate size, you shouldn’t have any problems.

PROS

  • Amazing design
  • Great warranty offering
  • Easy to use

CONS

  • Auto-defrost may have problems
  • Could be loud to some
Kenmore 55550 Dehumidifier, Energy Star - 50 Pint in White

Kenmore is a company that has been making quality products for a long time, and this 55550 is no exception.

This is a 50-pint dehumidifier but may be more appropriate for some smaller areas than others on the list.

The white design is good, but not great.  I wouldn’t be afraid to put this anywhere in my home, though.

It could be a bit pricey for some users for the model size.

Kenmore has packaged this item to come with a 12-month warranty, so you can be sure that they will take care of your product throughout that time period.

There’s nothing terrible about this model by any means. It runs a little bit loud compared to some other models, and for the value, I think it’s a middle of the road offering.

PROS

  • Nice design
  • Comes with warranty
  • Works in appropriately sized spaces

CONS

  • Can run loud
  • May not cover as much space as others
  • Not the best value
GE ADEL50LW 50 pt. Dehumidifier, Energy Star

GE is one of the leaders in appliances and have been in the industry a long time, so at this point we should be able to trust their design in products.

If you’re looking for a strong 50-pint model, this GE offering is a great place to start.

It does a great job of pulling that humidity from the air, even in larger spaces so if you need a high-powered offering, this is a great place to start looking.

The one problem or downside with this machine is that it can start to heat up a smaller space while taking that humidity away, which can definitely be a problem so it is more suited to larger homes or at least a larger area that you need a dehumidifier for.

Another downside is that you won’t have a standard warranty when buying this product.

Overall, the appearance and design of everything looks fine and I wouldn’t hesitate to buy this or place it somewhere that needed it.

PROS

  • Strong powerful dehumidifier
  • Sleek design
  • Reliable machine

CONS

  • May heat area
  • No warranty included

In Summary

Each of these models have some different pros and cons that make them suitable for use as a 50 pint dehumidifier.

This is a tricky industry where simply paying more doesn’t always mean you’re getting the best product for your individual needs.

You’ll want to consider the cost, design, efficiency, noise level, and ease of use for every model. With all of that information in hand, I believe you will make a confident purchasing decision when selecting a dehumidifier that will work for you.
